Thinking back, the common factor throughout my life was fear. Fearing that my parents could be deported I did not proceed to complete them and after class one day, I revealed to her that was undocumented. The applications asked for my parents social security numbers, and well, they nor I had a social security number at the time. My junior year a teacher who saw potential in me collected college and scholarship applications and asked me to fill them out and she would help me send them when it was time. In my high school years I often lied to friends about why I didn’t have an ID or driving permit to park in the student parking lot. I also felt shame and embarrassed if people knew my situation was different, as a kid, it was tough to comprehend these feelings.
I lived in the shadows, afraid that one day I could be deported and separated from my family. I had no choice when at 7 years old my parents immigrated to the United States in 1999 seeking a better life.Īt a young age I learned to not speak of where I was born or what our legal status in this country was. You can have reasons or you can have results and you can't have both. You can experience more in life if you'll get over the excuses and get on with living. So what if life hasn't been fair?
